Willamette University is a private co-educational liberal arts university established in 1842. It is the first university founded in the Western U.S. Its 60-acre campus lies in the Oregon State Capitol. The Willamette University athletic team is known as the Bearcats. They compete in the NCAA Division III level. Some of the intercollegiate sports include basketball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, track and field, and volleyball. The university is a pioneer member of the Northwest Conference league. The Willamette University Athletic Hall of Fame began in 1991. They bagged their first and only national championship with the men's basketball team won the NAIA Division II title.
