Tree Removal vs. Tree Trimming in Salem, OR

Your tree might be over shading your home or is too close to your property, either way, it needs to be trimmed or removed. Before deciding to trim it or having it completely removed, know the following distinctions and options, so you know the best way to deal with your tree care concern.

Know How Tree Roots Grow

Take time to know how the roots of the trees in your yard grow. You have to consider the size of the trunk to know how long the roots can grow. A tree's roots expand up to a foot and a half away from the trunk. This means a six-inch trunk at Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) can increase up to nine feet away from the trunk in all directions.

Tree Roots Need Water

Trees depend a lot on the water to grow. Their roots have the ability to seek a water spring. A tree's species also plays a big role in how much the root will grow and seek water. Take the aspen tree as an example. Its roots can grow in all directions and can be very harmful to your properties. It can spread under structures rapidly, causing walls or concrete roads to be distorted.

Trimming Tree Roots

Don't do it yourself. Call a tree service to assess the situation and give you the best possible answer. If you don't trim the roots properly, it's more likely that it gets infected with different diseases.

If you notice the roots of your trees grow under your home's foundation, it is best to call a tree service because it could cause the tree to collapse into your home during a storm.

Trimming and Pruning Your Tree

Pruning and trimming your tree will be beneficial to your tree. It can also help prevent future dangers caused by limbs and dead branches. Learning the mature size of your tree's species will aid you in knowing the best steps to take.  Take the following considerations when deciding how far you will plant a tree from your home:
  • Small trees- these trees should be at least 10 feet away from your home and other buildings
  • Medium-sized trees- These trees could grow as high as 70 feet. They should be situated closer than 15 feet to your home or other structure
  • Large trees- a tree that grows more than 70 feet should be at least 20 feet away from a house or any fixed structure

It is also better to know the tree's average canopy size when it fully matures to know the safest distance it can be planted near your home. If the diameter of a tree's canopy is 20 feet, it should be planted in a minimum of 10 feet from your home.

Tree Removal

Cutting your tree's roots or over-pruning it can cause the health of your tree to decline and eventually cause it to die. This usually causes a tree to collapse during a terrible weather condition, causing harm to your home or other structures nearby.  You have to be aware that knowing that your tree is damaged, diseased or dying but not doing anything about it will be a ground for your insurer to decline any claims when your tree falls and damaged your property.
