History of Salem, Oregon
Salem is a city in Oregon, which is located at the former site of a Calapooya Indian Village. Methodist missionaries who migrated to Salem rediscovered the place. Salem did not have much when it comes to population then. But as more people heard about Salem and the vast expanse of available lands, people started to pour in.
Salem’s Economy
Lumber is the primary source of income in Salem. The business has been successful throughout the years and has since become the major industry in Salem. Just like any other industry, the limber business has slowed down.
But lumber is not the only industry which keeps Salem alive. As years passed, the city has experienced a lot of economic influences. Salem has different sectors and businesses running its economy. Farming and crop processing is one business which contributes a lot to Salem’s economy.
Farmers utilize the lands which numbering has left off, planting crops which they can sell in the city and other areas near its vicinity. Before the lands dry up and lose its natural nutrients, they plant new trees on it to replenish its lost nutrients and fertilize it.

Salem is a city whose history is rich. This is remembered and appreciated by the markers and monuments which you can find around the city. This shows the deep appreciation and respect the people of Salem have for the history of their City.
The Start of Salem
This is a historical marker which shows the beginnings of the city of Salem. The marker maps the first and the earliest settlements. It also shows the home of pioneer minister Jason Lee and the site of the first saw mill.
Veteran’s Memorials
There are six memorials in the grounds of the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs. These memorials were made to honor Oregon military veterans now and then.

Salem’s Famous Architecture and Buildings
Salem also has a lot of famous architecture and buildings, which play roles in the development of Salem.

- The First United Methodist Church - Since Methodist missionaries discovered Salem, it is expected that they have a Methodist church in the city. The church is famous for its 185 feet tall white spire. It is also known for its pioneer heritage.
- The Reed Opera House - Cultural life at Salem in the early years took place in the Reed Opera House. Oregon’ Supreme Court used to occupy the third floor of the Opera House while on the second floor was an auditorium.
- Capitol Center - The Capitol Center is the tallest building in Salem with its eleven floors. This structure was built for the First National Bank by its owner, Thomas Livesley.
